Tourmaline is a wildly popular mineral and gemstone the world over. Like Quartz , Tourmaline comes in a great many colors and varieties, and these different varieties all have names associated with them, but they are all tourmaline. Some of these names are Elbaite (Green, Pink), Schorl (Black), Dravite (Black+Brown), Indicolite (Blue), Rubelite (Pink+Red) and Achroite (Clear), however I find that nowadays people do not use these variety names as much, and instead label specimens as just Tourmaline, or Black Tourmaline, or Pink Tourmaline, etc...

This is a piece of Rubelite or Pink Tourmaline, It gets its color from lithium that was in the environment as the crystals were forming, an1 3/4"d the Lithium got absorbed and included into the makeup of the crystals. It is in a matrix of topaz, and comes from Brazil.
