Epidote is a common rock forming mineral (this means that it can be a major component of rock formations). That being said, you really can't say Epidote is a rare mineral, but what is rare is when they actually form crystals. 999 times out of 1000 Epidote forms this green massive chunks of rock with no crystallization or crystal faces or any crystal form what so ever. Being a metamorphic mineral, there is rarely enough room form crystals, so they are extremely rare. When they do form crystals, they are often a very dark green, almost black, and they can be very lustrous and attractive.
