Carnelian is a name given to agate that is red or orange. Agate is named after the Achates River in Sicily where agate was probably first found. Agates chief component is silica (SiO2) and is from the quartz family. Agate is a form of chalcedony, a microscopically crystallized variety of quartz. When chalcedony has curved bands or zones of differing color it is called agate, and when the bands are straight the stone is called onyx. Both agate and onyx come in a multitude of colors and comes from all over the world! Carnelian is a 7 on the mohs hardness scale.
Carnelian provides courage and strength. It is a sacral and root chakra stone.
